Frequently asked questions

Q For ScienceDirect, where can I see the usage per journal, including journals I have access to but that are not being used?
A Run report “1a: Number of Successful Full-Text Article Requests by Month and Journal.” This report can be downloaded to your computer to keep permanently by using the export function. This report complies with the COUNTER code of practice.

Q For ScienceDirect ,which report shows how the backfiles or subject collections are being used?
A Run report “1b: Number of Successful Full-Text Article Requests by Entitlement, Month and Journal” and select the appropriate entitlement from the drop-down box or run report “4e. Document usage by entitlement” for a total over all journals.

Q For ScienceDirect, where can I see the usage of unsubscribed material?
A There are three reports which give usage on unsubscribed material: (a) report 1b gives the usage for full text documents, (b) report 1d gives the usage of non-full text documents (Abstracts, Abstract+References and SummaryPlust) and (c) report 1e gives the usage of article views (PDF, HTML, SummaryPlus and Abstract+References formats). For reports 1b and 1d, select the entitlement “Unsubscribed” from the drop-down box after running the report.

A Run report “2a: Number of Successful Requests for Full-Text Chapters by Month and Reference Work”, report “2b: Number of Successful Requests for Full-Text Articles by Month and Book Series”, or report “2c. A If you are an account administrator or a consortium administrator, you can view the usage for all groups or accounts within your organization. Usually these reports give the usage per group or per account. Report 1f however, shows the journal usage in the current year for all groups or accounts in one overview.

A For ScienceDirect, the COUNTER compliant reports are in folder 1 for the journal report, and in folder 3 for the search reports. For Scopus you can find the COUNTER compliant report in the folder “General Overview”.

Q I subscribe to both ScienceDirect and Scopus, but can only view the reports for one of these products.
A If you have a signed contract for both products and do not have access to both products (go to “Select Platforms” to check), you should contact E-Customer Service. The contact addresses can be found under “Contact Us”.

Q Where can I find detailed report descriptions?
A Report descriptions can be found on the librarian Info sites for ScienceDirect and Scopus (see “Links” section).

Running, printing and exporting reports

  • Changing platforms
If you have access to both ScienceDirect and Scopus reports, you will be able to choose either of these platforms on the first page after log-in. To change to reports for the other platform, click on “Select Platforms” in the breadcrumb trail.

    Starting a report
You can start running a report by clicking on the icon in front of the report name, or by clicking on the report name itself.

    Prompts
The reports in the subfolder in folder 1 (Usage per journal) include prompts. You are required to make a selection of one or more accounts or groups in the list. Highlight the name(s) of those you want to include in the report and then click on the right arrow so the name(s) show up in the right-hand box. Then click on “Run report”. Please limit the number of names to 5 at most for each report. An overview with the usage per journal for all accounts or groups can be obtained by running report 1f in the main folder 1.

    Page-by
Most reports have a page-by option, which enables you to view the usage of a different account or group, a different entitlement (subscription type) or year without having to rerun the report. The desired selection can be chosen from the drop-down box.

    Printing
Report results can be printed by clicking on the print icon. Tip: for large reports (e.g. usage per journal) it is advisable to export the report into Excel first and then print it from there.

    Exporting
All reports can be exported to a variety of formats: CSV, Excel (with and without formatting), plain text and HTML. You can export a report after running it or export directly from the list of reports.

Export options when exporting as Excel with formatting:
  • Expand all page-by fields: this will export not only the active page-by option, but also the other, hidden, selections. For the COUNTER reports, for example, this means that not only the current year, but also the previous year will be exported in a single action. You can place each page-by field below the other, or on a separate sheet.

  • Remove extra column from exported grid: in regular exports, there will be an empty column between the data in the first columns and the columns with the actual usage data. This option will remove that empty column.

  • PDF
All reports can be exported to PDF format, either after running a report or directly from the list of reports.

  • Expand all page-by fields: this will export not only the active page-by option, but also the other, hidden, selections. For the COUNTER reports, for example, this means that not only the current year, but also the previous year will be exported in a single action.
